Singer/songwriter Sophie Lockhart slipped into the music scene as one of America’s freshest voices, capturing the hearts of her listeners. Her songwriting is honest and authentic, her vocals are bold and dynamic, and her overall sound is undeniably unique. On top of that, Lockhart’s intentional artistry and relaxed charisma produce a raw, creative element that cuts through the noise in today’s music industry. With the 2016 release of her EP “Here to Stay," the 2017 releases of her singles “All Along” and "Heart on Display, " and the 2018 release of her single "Come Around," Lockhart, an independent artist, leaves her audience wanting more.
Lockhart, age 23, is a native of Kettering, Ohio and a Lee University graduate. As a multi-instrumentalist, she plays saxophone, acoustic guitar, piano, and ukulele in addition to singing. However, most people know Lockhart for her love of the craft and process of songwriting, which has become her life focus and her biggest strength. She often writes about the simple things in life, like her first visit to New York City, a perfect day with a perfect blue sky, and the love she has for the people around her. More than anything, though, Lockhart approaches her songwriting with a deep desire to connect with her listeners emotionally. She explains, “I just want to spread the light. I want to give people a reason to have hope. I want to make them smile. I want them to know that there is a real person trying to speak to them through the melodies they’re playing through their headphones. If what I’m doing as a musician resonates with them in any way, makes them feel hopeful or happy or peaceful, then I will have accomplished something.”
Musically, Lockhart pulls influence from contemporary artists such as John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and Five For Fighting, but she also loves to look back to some of the “greats,” like Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, and Simon & Garfunkel. Lockhart also has a passion for jazz, and greatly respects the work of musicians like John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Mix that all together and you get a style that is uniquely Sophie Lockhart. She says, “I’ve heard people compare my music and my voice to other musicians a lot, and I’m honored that they would hold me to that standard. But honestly, I just want to be me. I want people to hear my songs and know that it’s me.”
Through working with producers, artists, songwriters, and industry professionals such as Michael Farren, Chad Graham (Anthem Lights), Babbie Mason, Seth Mosley (Full Circle Music), and Ben Calhoun (Citizen Way), Lockhart has gained the experience, feedback, and credibility required in order to build a successful career in music. She is a learner, committed and ready, on the edge of taking the music industry by storm.
Lockhart’s EP “Here to Stay” and singles "Come Around, "Heart on Display," and “All Along” are available on all digital music platforms. To stay up to date with new music, videos, and show dates, be sure to join Sophie Lockhart’s mailing list and follow her on social media.
